Venezuela has accused the United States of carrying out an illegal naval operation in its territorial waters. According to officials, the US Navy destroyer USS Jason Dunham intercepted a Venezuelan tuna fishing vessel with nine crew members and held it for eight hours in the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The Venezuelan government described the action as hostile and provocative, saying it violated international maritime law. Foreign Minister Yván Gil demanded that the US immediately stop such operations, claiming they threaten security and regional peace.
The incident comes at a time of already strained relations between Caracas and Washington. The US has imposed sanctions on Venezuela in recent years, while the Venezuelan government has accused Washington of interference.
Analysts believe this event could further escalate tensions, complicating diplomatic dialogue and raising concerns over possible confrontations at sea.
